Common questions
Who can get help from Lanternhouse?
Young adults ages 16 to 24 who spent any time in foster care after age 13, in North Carolina or any other state. Some services at The Porch are open to any young adult experiencing homelessness.
Does it cost anything?
No. Every Lanternhouse service is free.
Do I need my documents to get started?
No. If you've lost your ID, birth certificate, or Social Security card, we'll help you replace them.
I'm still in foster care. Can I come?
Yes, if you're 16 or older. We work with your caseworker so we're not stepping on anyone's toes.
Do you work with DSS?
We partner with county departments of social services across the region, but we are an independent nonprofit. You don't need a caseworker to come to us.
Is my information private?
Yes. We don't share anything about you without your written permission, except where the law requires it, such as an emergency or a report of child abuse.
How is my donation used?
84 cents of every dollar goes directly to programs. Our audited financials and Form 990s are published on our financials page.
Is Lanternhouse a 501(c)(3)?
Yes. Gifts are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
